City supports Africa’s Richest Race Day

The Cape Town Met, the Mother City’s premier horse racing event, is taking place this Saturday, 28 January 2023. The City of Cape Town has been a proud sponsor of the event for the last 10 years. 

The City of Cape Town will continue its partnership with the Cape Town Met this weekend at the Kenilworth Racecourse.

The event starts at 12:00 on Saturday, 28 January 2023 when it hosts its biggest event post Covid-19 regulations. Kenilworth Racecourse, home to South Africa's most prestigious horse racing for more than a century, will host the Met from 12:00 on Saturday.

In addition to a day of exciting horse races, the event is well-known as the Cape's social event of the summer season. This year's event promises to be a fusion of fixtures, fabulosity, fun, and of course, fashion.

'The City has been a proud sponsor of the Met for the last decade. The Met is one of the country's highest rated thoroughbred horse races with a grade 1 rating.  While the last three years have been difficult for events in general, the Cape Town Met has proven its resilience and we are looking forward to seeing it return to its glory. This is an event that contributes immensely to the economy of this city, bringing roughly 30 percent of its patrons from outside the province to spend money in our city and provides business opportunities for local businesses who are still reeling from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security Alderman JP Smith.

In addition to the races and the festive atmosphere, attendees will also be entertained by some of the country's top artists including Kwesta, Pascal and Pearce, Sunset Sweatshop, NV Funk and Sun-El Musician.

Residents and motorists are advised of possible traffic interruptions in the Kenilworth and Lansdowne areas due to the event. There will strictly be no stopping allowed on the following roads from 05:00 until midnight:

To mitigate the impact on traffic, the event organiser has made available parking for event attendees at the Chukker Road Sports Ground.

A dedicated shuttle will transport attendees from Chukker Road to the race track and back post event.
